Background
I have practiced meditation daily for almost 5 years, participated 6-7 times in silent weekly retreats and many weekend retreats. My interest in meditation and Buddhism started in my youth when I read the book Siddharta by Hermann Hesse , which was published in Norwegian in 1972. The book is about the young Siddhartha who lived at the same time as Gautama Buddha. Siddhartha was also the Buddha's name before his enlightenment and means "the one who has achieved his goals", from siddha (achieved) + artha (that which is sought) and in the book the Buddha is called Gotama.
So started life with studies, work, family and children and the meditation was put on the shelf until approx. 5 years ago. I am a widow with adult children and have worked as a marine biologist, been out travelling a log, researched, done environmental surveys and taught marine biology at what is now NTNU.
It feels very meaningful for me to be able to contribute to DNBF and be a retreat leader in Trøndelag, participate in silent retreats, often together with young people who are curious about meditation and Buddhism. It is too late to regret that I took a long break in meditation.
I would definitely recommend adults to start with meditation as it has personally provided both self-development, peace of mind and reduced stress and helped with PTSD. Finally, I recommend listening to this DNBF Enigma podcast episode about mindfulness of death from the last retreat at Venabu:
Focusing on the fact that our body is going to die, can arouse a sense of spiritual urgency, that again can help us developing wholesome states of mind. This practice is of great fruit and benefits, it helps to put life in perspective − what is important in life, what should we prioritise, what values should we have. We ask ourselves – how kind have we been, how much gratitude have we shown and how much wisdom have we developed?
This contemplation gives us resilience in time of death, it helps us live our lives to the best, so we have no regrets. And surprisingly, in will also bring us into the present moment of our lives.
If you only have a short time left to live − what would you have done?

Some of the activities where Mona has been a retreat leader
25. February 2025
Troset outside Trondheim could offer everything this week in February 2025 - peace and quiet, beautiful nature, great weather, northern lights and a sparkling starry sky - as well as many who managed to expand their comfort zone on the way to a beautiful mind.
13. November 2023
Our first 9-day retreat in Trøndelag was at Troset, a new retreat center just outside Trondheim. It was a great retreat, in nice new premises!
