Background

I have practiced meditation and been interested in personal development for much of my adult life. At the same time, I have always had a great interest in outdoor life, especially the mountains. After my studies in Trondheim, I was lucky enough to get a job at home on the Helgeland coast and it was here that I rediscovered the joys of outdoor life. Around 2017, my interest in meditation and Buddhist practice increased since this resonated with something in me and seemed to have some kind of response to an underlying dissatisfaction I never fully came to terms with. I could escape temporarily through activity, the joy of being on a mountain trip and the like, but somehow didn't get to the root of the problem.

At the time of writing, I haven't found the root problem, but I'm gradually starting to get a deeper understanding that the solution is not something I can find by thinking. Gods know I've tried. But it is often when I get my thoughts at a distance, on a long mountain hike or a week-long silent meditation retreat, that the underlying dissatisfaction disappears and I enjoy small simple things around me. There is some fascinating gold here that is difficult to describe, but I think many have experienced it, this satisfaction of just being, which appears by itself, for example. on a long mountain hike or run.

On this basis, it feels very meaningful for me to contribute by serving on the board of DNBF. One of the things I have had the most pleasure doing, is contributing as a volunteer together with Ajahn Nitho on a 3-4-week long meditation retreat where we have invited like-minded people to join us to Jotunheimen and Hardangervidda. For me, it has been a luxury to have access to a genuine Buddhist monk with a lot of wisdom and knowledge of Buddhism. The conversations we have had in the evenings have taught me a lot and been more down-to-earth than what you often find in books.

In the same way, it feels meaningful to work in the local DNT team where I, among other things, works with the trips at UT.no, signage, earth works and other things that help people get on trips easier and safer. The combination of outdoor life and meditation is something I really appreciate. Often you will find me (or not), leaning against a tree in the forest in peaceful meditation, aided by the tranquility, smells and sounds of the forest. Either alone, or together with some of my friends in the local forest meditation group we have started that we call SiSA (Together in Silence Alstahaug).
