What could be better than having a retreat in a place called Sorgenfri (free of sorrow), south of Trondheim?

We were greeted with blue skies, sun and snow in Tromsø on Friday 15th of March - and found a city teeming with tourists from all over the world - in the middle of winter. But some also came to explore their minds.

We invited Ajahn Ajito from Vingrom, Lillehammer to Oslo to teach a weekend retreat for just before Christmas 2023.

Our first 9-day retreat in Trøndelag was at Troset, a new retreat center just outside Trondheim. It was a great retreat, in nice new premises!

DNBF's spiritual director did his annual three-month retreat in the mountains of Western Norway, a period with a focus on study, meditation and health.

The society's first visit and course in Bergen was fully booked, and despite the competition from sun and summer, we had a lot of teachings, discussions and testing of different meditation methods.

The Norwegian monk Ajahn Brahmali came to Norway to teach the method Buddha used to achieve awakening - meditation on the breath. Despite a cold, so that Ajahn Nitho had to be the warming-up monk on Friday, we got a nice presentation and many questions answered.

One of the members of the society's was interested in running a weekend course in Arendal, so in June Ajahn Nitho took the train to Arendal

In April 2023, DNBF conducted its first big 7-day retreat at Venabu Fjellhotell. The 47 retreatants impressed with their efforts and results!

At Vingrom, south of Lillehammer, beautifully situated on the mountainside, we find an energetic monk - who will soon be finished with three cabins for guests and monks.

Jaran DeLos Santos Olsen having a background as a psychologist and 6 years as a monk in Thailand, was invited to teach mindfulness and meditation.

We have collected key and recommended books about Buddhism - in English and Norwegian, as well as the forest tradition to which the society belongs.

On a large property in the Khao Jai National Park lives Ajahn Ganha - the nephew of Ajahn Chah. Ajahn Nitho was visiting for inspiration and meditation.

The weekend 20th to 22nd of January, the society organized a weekend retreat at Trondheim Taiji Senter, on the outskirts of Trondheim city centre, with Ajahn Nitho as instructor. We had over 30 retreatants, and a long waiting list.

The committee decided at a meeting on 7th of December 2022, to change the society's name from Oslo and Viken Buddhist Society, to "The Buddhist Society of Norway".

Ajahn Bram and Ven Canda were invited to the House of Litterature in Oslo, to talk about our complicated minds - which always have to find fault.

We had a visit from a woman with full ordination in Buddhism - Venerable Canda - a rare and exciting setting for teaching about our minds.

Meditation with a focus on insights into Buddhist philosophy and psychology was the theme of Jaran DeLos Santos Olsen's retreat at Pranahuset.

In July and August 2022, the society carried out a pilot project - a retreat in the mountain home over 4 weeks.

In Oslo, the three Norwegian monks were gathered in one place - for the first time. Ajahn Brahmali, visiting from Australia, was invited to teach.
